ABOUT:
MANAAKI was launched internationally in 2022 after designer Kat Tua was selected for the MR PORTER Futures Mentorship Programme. Since then, the brand has continued to be stocked globally, and in October 2025 opened its first flagship store, MANAAKI Matakana. Recognised for its values-driven approach to contemporary menswear grounded in te ao Māori, each MANAAKI garment is designed as a storytelling vessel with Papatūānuku — the earth — at its core. Over 90% of the collection is biodegradable, made from natural fibres, with a focus on using certified materials such as GOTS-certified organic cotton, RCS recycled fibres, and responsible wool, produced through ethically made factories. Through MANAAKI, Tua seeks to bridge the gap between traditional Māori clothing and contemporary daywear — and in doing so, bridge the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous cultures.
WHAKAARO:
Māori-owned, wāhine-owned, Te ao Māori drives our sustainable practice. MANAAKI is also an expression of Kat Tua’s art practice, with all printed artworks painted by Tua and translated into fabric to create a distinct visual language across the brand.
